eugenics
warning: I don't know what I'm talking about I'm just thinking in hypotheticals
it's bad for society or for large groups of people to coordinate in eugenics, but is it bad for an individual to do?
I support abortion through-and-through, but the idea of someone getting an abortion because they're pregnant with a girl and wanted a boy is ... really uncool. I don't think I want to outlaw that. But I don't like it.
But what if it were IVF, where parents did a genetic test to determine gender and then only implanted embryos of their desired gender? What if they tested for a disability like dyslexia or vulnerability to addiction? Or if they tested for queer traits (idk if this is possible) to ensure they got a straight kid?
If a family wants to have a straight boy, and the technology is available, why shouldn't they get to make that choice? Individually, I don't have a strong answer right now (other than ... it intuitively feels wrong.)
On the other hand, it's not something we can allow society to do or for large groups to do. Like what if 30% of families started using IVF to eliminate all queer kids? Or if some government mandate required the population to have 80% boys, selecting for high testosterone, for military reasons?
Like that would be really fucked up. And if you allow the individual to do it, then it enables groups to work together, to coordinate.
On the other hand, I think you can technically do the abortion thing, but I don't think that's a widespread problem or a coordinated problem.
I think maybe sometimes we gotta rely on people to be decent, and sometimes it backfires, but maybe that's worth it.
