Tread of Angels by Rebecca Roanhorse
It's a short lil novella by the author of one of my favorite series.
We're set in a world of literal angels and demons (and mostly humans). There are two main groups (races, basically) of humans, one that's considered demonic and the other considered angelic, basically.
It is very clear, obvious commentary on racism. It is also a pretty good little fantasy story. The main character's sister is accused of murdering one of the ... uh ... basically cops. Idr what they call them, but they're basically cops, and they're basically the KKK. The main character's journey to defend/free her sister is the primary story of the book.
There's a little bit of romance in it, but not too much. The story certainly more concerned with the story than the romance - the romance is a fairly small piece (thankfully).
The story resolves reasonably well, like it's a somewhat satisfying ending, but there are some jarring aspects toward the end of the book - just things I had not come to expect from the characters in the story. Honestly that might be fair. It's a pretty short story, so there's a lot of unwritten details about the characters. OTOH, maybe they still could have been developed better? Or. Yaknow. Sometimes people fucking surprise you.
I liked it. I'm a fan. It's a recommend from me, especially if you like a short read. Black Sun by Roanhorse is one of my all-time favorites though, and I recommend that one far more strongly than this book.
(P.S. Roanhorse has a book or two in the star wars universe and UGH. I like roanhorse a lot but i just do not care about star wars books, even though I was a fan of the movies as a kid. Still might check em out though, next time there's a lull in my fiction queue.)
