Ava's Blog

ava's blog I've read a few times, though not recently. I do most of my blog reading by scrolling the recents and I guess I just haven't seen her posts there when scrolling lately. Plus I write more and read less these days.

Ava wrote one of my all time favorite posts called time and place, where she discusses a pastor (whom she very much likes) "opening the speech with acknowledging and mentioning homophobia." And she writes about queer representation in media.

Sometimes you just wanna watch media with queer characters without something homophobic happening to them, without the characters being used to beat “love is love” down the throats of straight viewers. No attacking on the street, no hateful family member, no teary eyed coming out, just normal stuff happening that happens to the straight characters too.

I mean, these parts about homophobia, no matter if speech or media, are never really for us. It’s for the writer to take a stand, to perform allyship, and it’s for the straight audience.

You should read her full post. It's excellent, seriously an all time fave of mine, and very impactful to me.

She's written other posts I liked too, like finding kindness online, which after reading and yapping about, my best friend started playing palia (she loves palia and has such a cute house and garden and stuff!)

She also has this weird little command line website which is neat

P.S. On the topic of queer representation without queer trauma, I highly recommend the book Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. This book isn't about being queer, we just exist in it, we belong. It's an excellent book.
