Climate progress requires sacrifice

Beef production requires a lot of land and the clearing of rainforests. More ethical cow farming requires even more land. We cannot produce this much beef without harming the environment.

The same could be said for palm oil.

And toys.

And packaged food.

And clothes.

Corporations (and politicians) are responsible for many harms. Cars, phones, and tractors aren't repairable. Improper management of waste water. Toxic chemicals in nonstick pans. Ads to promote consumption. The war industry.

But many harms are at the service of our every-day comforts and desires. Regardless where we place the blame, a more environmentally friendly world will have less beef, fewer clothes, more repairs (less of the new shiny things), more people on the bus (less taking your own car), and many other changes.

A more climate friendly world does require sacrifice.

We should pressure politicians and corporations to do better. But "better" also requires us to sacrifice, us to do our part. Don't buy the new shirt. Say no to a straw. Don't upgrade your phone until it's ruined. Eat less meat & dairy, and choose chicken over beef. Grow a garden. Insulate your home. Don't use AI. Etc Etc.

Start small. Keep pressing corporations and politicians. Give yourself grace. It's often impossible to truly clean up your climate impact, and none of us are perfect. And disabilities present significant barriers too.

There's many changes I've made (mostly given up meat, no beef, minimal dairy. Plastic bags are rare), but many changes I haven't made - I still drive a truck (public transit is too slow here, I can't afford an electric vehicle, and I just don't have it in me to ride my bike these days), I buy pre-packaged frozen meals, I use a dryer instead of hanging my clothes, and so many other things.

I'm not saying you have to be perfect. My main point is to own the fact that we, everyday people, do make choices that contribute to the problem, and that the corporations in many cases are serving our consumer choices when they pollute and cut down rain forests and work child slaves with inadequate PPE.
