Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse was an excellent book and this is #2 in the Between Earth & Sky series.

SPOILER ALERT: I will be spoiling major parts of the plot. If you want an introduction to the series, read my review of Black Sun, where I make an effort not to spoil anything beyond the early setup of the book. I might also spoil some of Book 3 because I have finished that a couple weeks ago and it's hard to keep track of where one book ends and the other begins.

Xiala's mission was successful, delivering Serapio to Tova. They spent a wonderful day together in Tova before he completed his mission and slaughtered the priests and their followers from the Celestial tower. Naranpa sorta died at the end of Book 1, but she called for her brother's witch, was buried in a tomb as part of some ritual, and made it out alive, perhaps reborn, now with the Sun God inside of her - much as the Crow God (Shadow God) is inside Serapio.
Serapio was supposed to die when completing his mission, but he did not, perhaps because the Sun Priest (Naranpa) lives. (she only lived because there was a coup before the slaughtering took place). Some small crows gave their lives so Serapio may live.
Tova is now in shadow, under the spell of the Crow God, as the Crow and Sun gods fight for control. The rest of the world is not in shadow - I think the Sun continues to do it's thing, but there is a shroud over the city of Tova, which is not explained til midway through Book 3. The lack of explanation on this point was ... it was just confusing. I wondered if there were two suns, one rising on the rest of the world, but not rising over Tova.
So anyway, the Crow clan is in power, Tovans are hiding in fear, many are flocking to the Crow Clan wanting to support them and the Crow God Reborn. Serapio basically hangs out at the Crow Clan while the other Matrons (including Okoa of Crow clan!) plot to overthrow/murder him.
Lord Balam and his Cuecolan cohort are sailing to Hokaia where they will organize with Golden Eagle and the Hokaians to wage war against Tova (war comes in Book 3).
Xiala has come to Crow Clan territory but runs off with Iktan - the Priest of Knives who was not at the slaughtering, as xe often has a dedicant stand in their place for boring things. The two of them travel with Golden Eagle toward Hokaia, and run into some issues with the Eagle leaders, who want information from Xiala. (actually the leaders are afraid of Iktan but the xe is on their side.)
Umm, what else?
Xiala meets her mom again after being estranged for years. Or is that book 3? I don't remember.
There's surely much more to say, many details forgotten. Oh! All the stuff between Naranpa and her brother in The Maw, with the Bosses in the Maw. That shit was good too.
Goddamn though, it's such a fucking good book. There's whole ass story lines for Naranpa, Iktan, Xiala, Serapio, Okoa, and Lord Balam and his cohort.
Book three is also excellent.
