Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
Orogenes are humans with magical powers to manipulate the earth. Guardians control them and rock-eaters are a whole other thing.
I loved this book. Very possibly my favorite fiction I've ever read. I don't care to say much about it now, but I really really loved it.
Update: After reading all three books, this is definitely my favorite book series of all time.
