I take things too literally?

I was watching a Veritasium video (beware occasional bad information & propaganda from them) and a guy said that when the network-effect is present you want to be the "last" one to join.

Example being a phone network that runs on 5G. If you're the first company to do 5G, nobody can really use it because the other companies don't have 5G. The last company to adopt 5G will get max benefit with minimal investment.

And I felt the need to argue (in my head) with this "last" claim. Like, it's probably better to be in the middle of the pack a lot of the time, right? I don't know.

But maybe he wasn't being literal. Maybe he wasn't trying to make an extremely well-researched authoritative statement about this. He was just sharing a concept in pretty simple & understandable terms.

Is is the "last" company that benefits most? I don't know, probably not. But it doesn't matter & I think maybe I need to take some things less literally.
