Please stop using Luddite as a slur

Data protection officers and other privacy professionals feel coerced into going along with some dicey setups and risky processing activities because they can’t afford being seen as a Luddite who will advise against everything and ā€œhinder progressā€, aka cost saving via AI replacement.

'Luddite' is a term popularly used to refer to somebody who is opposed to technological progress, who will not get with the times.

But Luddites were fucking revolutionaries.

Textiles were a cottage industry. Then machines were developed and production of clothes and such became a factory-based industry. These factories were owned by Capitalists - people who have a lot of capital (money, property).

The working conditions were terrible and cottage industries were destroyed, and the Capitalists took the profits. Factories were a relatively new feature of society at this point.

So the Luddites, being the fucking rockstars they are, destroyed these machines in protest.

They were anti-Capitalist, not anti-technology. Please hold them in high regard. If only we had people so willing to resist today.

What I know comes from my all-time favorite podcast, The Industrial Revolutions, Chapter 24: The Luddites:

As capitalists invested in machine technology, they put many of their traditional competitors out of business, forcing them into the factories as de-skilled workers. Then, between falling incomes and rising prices, those began to strike back. And the Luddites – a shadowy network of militant 20-somethings, led by a man who probably never existed – went to war with the machines and their owners. This is their story.
