Re: self-hosting static assets
on self-hosting your static assets or any piece of media | mgx
The setup is simpler than most people think. Cheap VPS options abound.
I think Shared Hosting is better than VPS for this. Webhosts manage all the nitty gritty of Shared Hosting and it is often cheaper than VPS.
The only requirement is discipline
That's a problem
The calculus is simple. Every time you rely on someone else's storage, you're betting they'll remain solvent, committed, and aligned with your needs. Companies pivot. Policies change. Services sunset. But if your media lives on your own server, it lives on your terms.
When you self-host, you're betting that you'll keep paying for your hosting service, betting that your web-host will stay alive, betting that you'll continue to put in the maintenance time each year (yes, it's small if you're just renewing a domain name and paying hosting bills, but still).
I like self-hosting sometimes, but it is definitely not for everybody. I like the convenience and ease. I like not having to be disciplined. I like not having to do the maintenance each year. Let somebody else deal with it & give a little money to a service I like if I can afford it.
One thing though - it does feel cool to host your own shit.
