The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin

We follow Yeine Darr, who is summoned to the city of Sky and named heiress to the Arameri throne. She meets her cousins who are also named heir and heiress, and it turns out Yeine's role is meant to be deciding which of her cousins shall take the throne, for she had been outcast from the kingdom. (You learn all this very early on).

Yeine befriends Sieh early on, a child-god, and much of the story revolves around the conflict between the gods and the Arameri, and the relationships between Yeine and the gods. There are many gods in this story, but only two original gods - Itempas and Nahadoth. Itempas, the god of light, previously won a war against Nahadoth - the god of shadow - and his godling supporters, and Itempas condemned Nahadoth and his cohort to serve the Arameri.

This is book one of the Inheritance Trilogy, though apparently there are five books now and I still need to read the last two! But I don't think my library has them.

Book 2 of this series focuses on a woman named Oree Shoth, who was not part of book 1. It is centered in the city of Sky, and we do see many of the characters from book 1, but this is very much centered around Oree. I love book 1, but I think book 2 is my favorite of the series.

Book 3 then focuses on one of the godlings we met in book 1. I find this changing of main-characters to be jarring at first. Like when I started Book 2, I just wanted to focus on the people and plot lines of Book 1! But the changing of characters came to be really refreshing and I was quickly invested in the new (though related) plot lines and main characters.

These books also have excellent character development, world building, and really make you care about those you're reading about.

I love this series deeply. I highly recommend it, though I'd suggest starting with The Fifth Season of the Broken Earth Series, my all time favorite.

Book Reviews

P.S. I'm a silly-billy dummy-idiot! I read this series 2 or so months ago and FORGOT TO REVIEW IT!!! I do not think I'm going to write follow-up reviews of books 2 and 3, because it's just work I don't feel like doing and covering the first book is good enough.
