The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin
I previously read The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin (Book 1), and I think it's my favorite book of all time. Or maybe this one is. They're both freaking incredible. Can't wait to start book 3! (tonight!)
There's magic in these stories, and it is an interesting type of magic, different from any magic I've encountered in other stories. And it's not a "good guy vs bad guy" story like so many stories are. We do have our protaganist, and other secondary main characters and characters we don't like. Like there are "bad guys", but I wouldn't say that it's a simple story of good vs evil of GOOD GUY vs BAD GUY. It's so good.
Read it. But start with The Fifth Season. I bet your local library has it!
P.S. In my Fifth Season post, I mentioned "rock-eaters". Well. They're "stone eaters" lol
