white culture
As a queer person, I get to celebrate queer culture annually at my local Pride Fest. We can organize to feature queer-themed art, made by queer-artists. I have some concern there with excluding non-queer artists who make queer-themed art, but the general idea stands. (& their art could probably be included provided its on-theme)
A local African American history organization features specifically black culture and history, and hosts events to celebrate black culture.
A local hispanic group also hosts public events to celebrate hispanic culture.
I would not feel comfortable organizing a "White Pride" event like I would for queer pride. I see no issue with black or hispanic focused celebrations. But a white-focused celebration? Seems messed up.
I know, I know - we have 4th of July, dominate American culture, and tend to benefit from white supremacy and patriarchy. My family was given a bunch of farm land a couple hundred years ago, for heck's sake.
But I don't personally identify much with "American" culture or other areas where white-people have dominated the culture. In queer spaces, I have an in-group, and I feel good about celebrating our shared culture, our shared struggle.
I get the sense there is no "white culture" to celebrate, aside from the atrocities my ancestors (& some white folks today) committed. Whities have a long history of treating black people, hispanics, queers, asians, and other groups horribly.
But white elites also have a long history of treating poor white people horribly. Perhaps we need to start celebrating poor culture because man, we got poor folks in every demographic. (that idea came to me while writing and actually YES we probably should celebrate poor culture. DONT LET THE YUPPIES WIN!)
Even with the land-grant and the decent wealth within my family, I can barely afford to engage in any culture, or afford many of my basic needs. I'm dirt poor and I can't afford car repairs. I'm only housed because my mom's paying the bills, and she's certainly not wealthy. My dad owns the house, so it kinda works out. I can't afford medicine or tests that my insurance doesn't cover.
As far as the white-culture of it goes, I don't really have a solution in mind. The main point of this post is to identify that straight whites don't necessarily have the same kind of cultural hotspots that queer folk or black folk do, and that some people might want that, and it might not be a white-supremacy/nazi thing.
P.S. Shit I didn't even mention women. Women been oppressed horribly, often by white men, but not exclusively.
P.P.S. I poke fun at yuppies, but most of ya'll are working class, not elites, and its okay to enjoy your pumpkin spice :P
